Five Lean Cuts of Beef

Alright, I know that I post a lot about meatless meals, but even I am one that does enjoy steak. Especially if I am picking up my training volume. Here in the states, we are about head into Labor Day Weekend and the first weekend of college football. This is a huge weekend for grilling, drinking some beer and hanging out with all your mates.

I thought I’d put together a short list of lean cuts of beef that you normally wouldn’t use and are very budget friendly. All of these meats are best on the grill, cooked very fast to a medium-rare temperature. If you do not have a grill, sear them on a cast iron sauté pan.

Tri-tip Steak

This has a very rich and hearty flavour. All it really needs is some kosher salt and pepper. Serve it with some grilled veggies and you have a great meal!

Shoulder Tender

This cut is also known as Petit Filet. It looks like a pork tenderloin had babies with a beef tenderloin. I like to slice this into medallions and cook just like a beef tenderloin.

Hanger Steak

This is one of my favorite cuts of meats to use in tacos!!! It’s not very pretty, but wow is it rich, flavourful and hearty!

Shoulder Center

This is very very lean. It has a much more mild flavuor than the other meats so I would recommend putting your favourite marinade on this one.

Bottom Round

This cut can be quickly grilled to more of a rare temperature after marinating. Now, if you have time to braise a piece of meat, this is the one to do it with. You can cook it like it pot roast.

I hope some of you try some of these leaner and budget friendly cuts of beef. I know I will have a few on the grill this weekend!!!
